We realise that we can’t answer every single question you may have about building, construction, domestic home improvement and commercial building assistance – along with all of the other services that we offer.
Here we have put together some questions that we are frequently asked and we would welcome you to contact us directly should we not have answered your questions across the website or in this section.
When I contact you do I get through to a main call centre?
No we are a family company with a huge team of tradesmen, you will only receive a very personal service from our medium sized company and will be assigned one person to assist you to help with enquiries you have. Our professionals at the office are there as contacts and are the friendly first line of contact you will have with us. If you prefer to, email us or use the contact form.
When can I receive a quotation for the project I would like to enquire about?
We invite you to either call us directly, email us or use our contact form to tell us about your proposal. We arrange a prompt appointment to meet you at a very convenient time. When we leave we will have all of your ideas to take to the drawing board about your quick job or a very large building and construction project.
What information do you need from me about the work or project I wish to talk to you about?
If you are simply thinking about taking your project from an idea to the next step, we simply will talk to you about your plans. We can then move forward and help you with design and planning stages and will project manage from the outset. If you already have any drawings, either from an architect or from your own drawings then they will help us picture your ideas and take them one step further. Our expert contact will arrange a formal quotation and will speak with you about a proposed schedule. Of course, this is ideal for larger projects. Smaller jobs will be much simpler.
How do you work out how much I will be charged for the work I would like you to do?
For some of our services, such as emergency plumbing and electrical work we won’t charge a call out fee but we will quote you our hourly or daily rate, always taking into consideration the type of work, the team or individual trade person who will need to attend, and which parts may be required. For large projects, such as conservatories, kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, extensions and loft conversions we aim to provide you with a project fee and will break the quote down as much as possible. Please note the possibility that the initial quote may change depending on if we discover issues with the space we are working with once we begin (such as leaks, damage to roofs, crumbling floors and walls etc.
I have already been to an architect with my ideas, what do I do with those?
This is an excellent start and you can send them to us anytime. We work with architects all the time and their drawings give us a clear idea of what you really want – they also help you visualise your own ideas on paper so if you can, especially for extensions and larger builds, restorations and transformations to the rooms in your home or property, they are a great thing to have to pass to us. Our priority is to deliver to you exactly what you want so we like to keep communications with all of those involved open throughout the process.
Do you do architectural drawings?
Whilst we aren’t professional architects we can offer design and build. A certain level of drawings can be achieved at our office but we can recommend an architect for when you are proposing building or refurbishment projects that will require planning permission.
Can you carry out renovations or changes to listed buildings?
Yes we can and we carry out work, communicating closely with you and all those involved in projects. All projects are carried out sympathetically by heavily trained tradesmen who are qualified, have years of experience, and who take care and pay genuine attention to detail.
The gardens at our office would look great with some wooden structures as places for colleagues to relax, can you do this type of work?
Yes we can carry out landscaping including setting up fencing around your boundaries, creating bespoke summerhouses and wooden sheltered areas of any style and size using responsibly sourced timber. We also create wooden furniture for inside the office as well as custom made arbours, tables, seating and benches for your garden areas.
I have planning permission already for an extension project I wish to carry out, do I need building regulations before contacting you?
It is a great idea to be able to provide us with building regulations plans and drawings, along with the specification of works to be done. However, we are always happy to visit you before any planning has been carried out, help you with designs, and advise you on the route to take when obtaining planning permission. Certain refurbishments, depending on locations and how much a building has already been extended or changed internally may not require planning permission but it is always worth contacting your local authority to find out more.
What about Health and Safety regulations?
Our safety policy is a comprehensive one. We are entirely familiar with all regulations and will never put anyone in danger. Our team have been trained fully on health and safety and follow them by the text book. We appoint first aiders to be on site on large projects.
Is my project large or too small for Carter Builders to carry out at my home or property?
Never too small, never too big. With such a huge range of building and joinery projects, we always like to carry out the smaller jobs and large projects that require a project manager. Small projects may be simply moving sockets in a room and a large job involves extensions, kitchen re-fits and loft conversions. Because we are experienced in everything listed on our services pages, which means we offer our team skills in order to carry out those small works as well as providing you with a team to carry out more complex projects.
Do you cover the rest of the South East and surrounding counties to London and Essex?
We predominantly cover clients in Essex and London because we like to be able to offer customers prompt arrival when it comes to communicating ideas and arriving for emergency work (such as plumbing and electrics.) We of course will be happy to take enquiries from home and property owners further afield.
What type of insurance cover and guarantees do Carter Builders provide?
Any new build developments or individual homes and building works are carried out following the national NHBC and similar building regulations to ensure that buildings are finished to specification, and that residents or occupants are entirely safe. For other projects we are covered by an extensive and relevant list of insurances such as Public Liability, Risks Insurance and Employers Liability Insurance. We will always provide details on request and constantly give you peace of mind whilst we work with you.
What makes Carter Builders different from others in the areas?
We offer a complete turnkey solution which takes out worry and stress from any project. We work closely with you with our larger projects being entirely project managed. You are free to have as much involvement as you like. Our smaller jobs are carried out promptly, with as little disruption to your home or property as possible, and with as much care and dedication as we put into huge works like loft conversions and refurbishments.
Finally, what services exactly do you provide?
We will undertake all kinds of building and construction services. These include work that ranges from loft conversions, extensions, conservatories and complex refurbishments. We can carry out other home improvements such as modernising a home or property, commercial building, retail fit-outs and then interior plastering, dry-lining, decorating, wood flooring, bespoke furniture, bathroom and kitchen and bedroom installations, electrical, roofing, sound proofing, painting and decoration, and exterior rendering.
